John Henry Davies steps in to save the club and renames it Manchester United
Wealthy
brewer John Henry Davies takes over Newton Heath and saves it from
bankruptcy. He and his four colleagues pay the debts and change the
club’s name to Manchester United. United wear red shirts from the
beginning.
Winners of the first FA Charity Shield
Jimmy
Bannister’s 1908 FA Charity Shield medal. After a 1-1 draw in April
against the champions of the Southern League, Queen’s Park Rangers,
United won the rematch 4-0 in August.
Newton Heath move to Bank Street, Clayton
After
eviction from their North Road ground Newton Heath move to Bank Street
in Clayton. These plans show the ground in the early twentieth century.

Football Club in 1878, the club became Manchester United in 1902.
Bazaar organised to raise funds to save Newton Heath from going out of business
The
bazaar to raise funds to help save Newton Heath from going out of
business is not a huge success. Harry Stafford’s lost dog does at least
bring the club’s plight to the attention of local wealthy benefactor
John Henry Davies.
Promotion to Football League Division One
Secretary-manager
Ernest Mangnall guided Manchester United to promotion to the Football
League Division One. To celebrate this success Mangnall and the team
were presented with these gold medals by Club President Davies.
